Citadel President Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa met with faculty today to bring them up to speed on the state of the college.

Health, Excercise and Sports Science Professor John Carter was awarded professor emeritus from Citadel Provost Brig. Gen. Sam Hines.  Carter, who retired this month, was on faculty for 25 years. 

Monday began the week-long fourth class training for the class of 2015.

Citadel President Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa met the 2015 to discuss expectations and to prepare them for the year ahead.

The South Carolina Corps of Cadets class of 2015 reported to campus 734 young men and women strong this past weekend, tying last year’s record-breaking class. Last summer’s freshman class was the largest at The Citadel in 35 years.

Citadel President Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa met with parents on matriculation day to discuss what they should expect as the parents of freshmen.  As the father of a graduate, Rosa was once a parent sitting in the audience.

Family members said their goodbyes Saturday to their fourth class cadets.  Knobs are prohibited from speaking to their families until Aug. 23.

While they've grown up in a digital age, members of the class of 2015 look forward to receiving old fashioned snail mail from family and friends.

The Star of the West Competition is the culmination of many hours of practice in rifle drill. The winner is named the "Best Drilled Cadet" and has his or her name inscribed on the Star of the West Monument located near the flagpole on Summerall Field. That cadet wears the Star of the West Medal. The ship, Star of the West, was fired upon by Citadel cadets in 1861.

Michael Czyrnik was the winner of the annual Star of the West Competition for the best drilled cadet.

S.C. Governor Nikki Haley spoke at 6th Annual Free Enterprise Foundation Awards April 28.

The Brawley Award for Outstanding All-Around Achievement by a Faculty Member in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences was presented Monday to Honors Program Director and Professor Jack Rhodes.  Given by Dr. Wallace (Skipper) Brawley, ’62, this is the second year in which the award has been presented.

Citadel Media Coordinator Charlene Gunnells was given a NROTC Medal and commendation Monday for outstanding support of the Marine and Navy unit.  Commanding Officer Col. Brent Dunahoe made the presentation.

Citadel Photographer Russ Pace was recognized Monday by the Navy Marine unit for his outstanding contributions and support of the NROTC unit.

Freshman cadets are overcome with tears of joy and relief and an incredible sense of accomplishment as the words, "The Fourth Class System is no longer in effect" echo over the loud speaker.

Saturday's Recognition Day concluded at Marion Square, site of the original Citadel campus, where the class renewed the cadet oath. The march to Marion Square is a reminder to the cadets of those who came before them and of the history they are now a part of as the Class of 2014.

“Recognition Day is a significant benchmark in a cadet's journey toward becoming a principled leader,” said Regimental Commander Cadet Col. Cory Moyer.

“The freshmen have completed a challenging and demanding Fourth Class System, and it is because of their dedication and commitment to teamwork that they have succeeded to this point,” said Regimental Commander Cadet Col. Cory Moyer.

More than 600 freshmen worked together and persevered during Saturday’s Recognition Day events, marking the end of the strict Fourth Class System and the first steps in becoming leaders in the Corps of Cadets.

The Citadel’s eight-month-long Fourth Class System lays the foundation early in a cadet’s career for the development, character and discipline implied in the college’s mission of educating principled leaders.

“Recognition Day does not signify an end of cadet development,” said Commandant of Cadets Col. Leo Mercado, USMC (Ret.)

“It [Recognition Day] is a transition point in The Citadel’s leadership development program as Fourth Class cadets assume their roles as leaders and mentors for the Class of 2014,” said Commandant of Cadets Col. Leo Mercado, USMC (Ret.)

“The events associated with Recognition Day reinforce the concept of teamwork and overcoming adversity through physical challenges and the tenacity to succeed in the face of hardship,” said Commandant of Cadets Col. Leo Mercado, USMC (Ret.).

Recognition Day began just before 6 a.m. with a physical training for the 2,100-member Corps of Cadets which was followed by leadership instruction for the knobs, the physically demanding Gauntlet team challenge course and the recognition ceremony in each of the five cadet battalions.

Recognition Day is the day that the freshmen are recognized by name rather than by “knob.” Among the privileges they receive are an end to the shorn heads characteristic of knobs and the freedom to walk at a normal pace around campus instead of the knob 120 steps a minute.

Marine Staff Sgt. Daniel Siemieniec presents a $15,000 check to Lt. Gen. John Rosa for the Warren A. Frank Memorial Leadership Fund, in honor of the fallen Marine captain and Citadel Class of 2004 graduate.  The money was raised at the Semper Fi Society’s annual Bulldog Challenge.  Siemieniec  was the director of this year’s event.

Pace, has been at The Citadel for 25 years. He has photographed more than 600 dress parades, and his award winning pictures tell The Citadel story in a way words cannot.

Commandant of Cadet Col. Leo Mercado, USMC retired, has announced the top cadet leadership for the 2011-2012 academic school year.

This list includes the regimental commander, regimental staff, battalion and company commanders as well as sergeants major and first sergeants. The cadets are rising juniors and seniors and will assume command and leadership responsibility for the South Carolina Corps of Cadets during the May 6 Long Gray Line dress parade.

Seniors are anticipating commenciment, which is only 32 days, and a wake up, away. Closing in on the one month gap to May 7th, the seniors begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

When cadets returned from sping break Sunday, they found the campus in full bloom. 

Gen. Barry McCaffrey, who completed his military career as the commander in chief of the U.S. Armed Forces Southern Command and who went on to serve as the cabinet officer in charge of U.S. Drug Policy, gave a Greater Issues address March 24, in McAlister Field House.

McCaffrey, who is president of his own consulting firm based in Arlington, Va., and who serves as a national security and terrorism analyst for NBC News, gave a national security update and discussed current perspectives.
