The Star of the West Competition is the culmination of many hours of practice in rifle drill. The winner is named the "Best Drilled Cadet" and has his or her name inscribed on the Star of the West Monument located near the flagpole on Summerall Field. That cadet wears the Star of the West Medal. The ship, Star of the West, was fired upon by Citadel cadets in 1861. |

Recognition Day began just before 6 a.m. with a physical training for the 2,100-member Corps of Cadets which was followed by leadership instruction for the knobs, the physically demanding Gauntlet team challenge course and the recognition ceremony in each of the five cadet battalions.

Recognition Day is the day that the freshmen are recognized by name rather than by “knob.” Among the privileges they receive are an end to the shorn heads characteristic of knobs and the freedom to walk at a normal pace around campus instead of the knob 120 steps a minute. |

Commandant of Cadet Col. Leo Mercado, USMC retired, has announced the top cadet leadership for the 2011-2012 academic school year.
This list includes the regimental commander, regimental staff, battalion and company commanders as well as sergeants major and first sergeants. The cadets are rising juniors and seniors and will assume command and leadership responsibility for the South Carolina Corps of Cadets during the May 6 Long Gray Line dress parade. |
